MEDICAL
ASSISTANT
JOB SUMMARY: Assists physicians, certified nurse
practitioners and/or nurse with patient examination and treatment. Responsible for patient medical histories,
routine lab procedures, collection of specimens and reading patient vital
signs. Responsible for intake
information and correct data input into EMR.
JOB
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Maintains
the general appearance and cleanliness of exam rooms and
work area. Keeps
room fully stocked with supplies.
Follows specified list for each physician module. Maintains inventory identifying needs to
supply person.
2. Maintains
timely flow of patients. Notifies
patients of delays.
3. Cover
for lunches when scheduled to do so.
4. Greets
patients and prepares them for physician examination.
Obtains and documents patient histories including
medications and drug allergies, height, weight, blood pressure, pulse and
temperature when needed.
5. Labels
all specimens correctly and fills out labs/paper work
appropriately.
6. Performs
fetal non-stress test (NST) exams, draws blood collects
urine samples, performs office lab procedures and
documents results, in appropriate area of EMR.
7. Cleans
and sterilizes equipment. Performs
quality control measures
and documents in appropriate log.
8. Instructs
patient regarding preparation for tests.
Provides
information and pamphlets.
Requests and assists with formal consent when required.
9. Receives
and organizes the handling of medication samples, checks
expiration dates and disposes outdated medications and supplies
(ie; cultures, etc) according to policy.
10. Disposes
of contaminated and disposable items appropriately.
11. Able
to receive and make calls to patients regarding test results or
any other patient information under the direction of a
nurse or physician.
12.
Schedules testing/procedures as ordered by physician.
13. Precerts procedures and testing
14. Calls
in prescriptions as ordered by the CNP or physician.
15. Maintains
strictest confidentiality.
EDUCATIONAL
REQUIREMENTS: Graduate of a Medical
Assisting Program. Medical Assistant
certification from an accredited program preferred.
KNOWLEDGE,
SKILLS, & ABILITIES: Knowledge
of medical terminology to communicate with clinical staff. Knowledge of common safety hazards and
precautions to establish a safe working environment. Skill in taking vital signs. Skill in collecting and labeling specimens.
Ability to follow quality control guidelines. Ability to read and understand
oral and written instructions. Ability
to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Ability to follow written protocols, policies
and procedures.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships with patients, employees and the public. Ability to communicate
clearly.
