Overview
In 1997, Kingsdale Gynecologic Associates, Inc. and Northeast Obstetricians
& Gynecologists, Inc. met to discuss the development of a Physician
Service Organization (PSO). The merging of the administrative functions
and other services would create an organization large enough to
enhance purchasing and negotiating power.
The PSO structure is the most appropriate and effective management
structure for the participating physician practices. It allows the
flexibility to combine information, decrease duplicate services,
and improve operating efficiencies without individual practices
losing their identity or independence.
The implementation of the goals for MaternOhio and the development
of services rests on a streamlined administrative staff. One administrator
is responsible for the oversight management of each core physician
practice. Other corporate duties consist of addressing legal and/or
regulatory issues involved with the organization’s formation.
Core competencies of the organization include negotiation, practice
management, and awareness of the obstetric/gynecologic physician
practice industry.
MaternOhio’s goals for the PSO are to:
- Streamline costs
- Support administrative functions
- Improve negotiating power with payers and other vendors
- Share and distribute risk
MaternOhio offers services that result in cost savings through
long-term efficiencies, contract negotiations, and decreasing duplicate
efforts. The transfer of such responsibilities allows the physicians
to direct their focus on patient care.
